DESCRIPTION

This is a Flat Cow Hair Paintbrush. This is THE classic Waldorf paintbrush with a natural handle and soft cow hair made in Germany for Mercurius Brand (Art Makes Sense). Of course, it’s a great paintbrush for anyone, Waldorf student of or not. With proper care these brushes will last for a long time. These brushes have approximately 12-13 inch long handles of FSC certified wood.

For the lower primary school Waldorf classes, if you choose this brush we recommend sizes 16, 18, or 20 (1st grade-20, 2nd grade-18, 3rd grade-16) and for kindergarten, sizes 20 or 22 or try our specialty brushes made specifically for primary school years here, grades Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. These specialty brushes have shorter handles that are easier to wield for little hands than these longer brushes. The flat tips are the same regardless of if you choose this longer handled brush or the specialty shorter handled brush made for the early primary grades.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THIS LONGER HANDLED BRUSH VERSUS SPECIALTY SHORTER HANDLED BRUSH FOR GRADES K - 3rd GRADES

Both brushes (this long handled brush and the specialty brush) have the same brush head width and cow hair. The disadvantage of the longer handled brush is that it can be a bit more difficult for primary grade children to hold and use, especially in Kindergarten and 1st grades. The specialty brushes have a shorter, stockier handle to make holding and using the brush easier for young children. Young children feel more comfortable with the shorter brush and enjoy painting a bit more.

The advantage of choosing the long handled brush over the shorter, specialty brush is that as your child moves up in grades to upper elementary and middle school, they will already have a complete set of flat brushes with the longer length handles (sizes 22, 20, 18, 16, and so on) versus a partial set of long handled brushes and 2-3 short handled specialty brushes, of which they may or may not want replaced with the longer ones as their hands and arms grow larger and longer.

So basically, you are looking at short-term (2-4 years) of comfort and ease of use during painting versus long-term investment amount (more eventual investment with using the shorter brushes if your child needs them replaced with the longer handle).

CARE:

Clean paint from bristles with warm water (water-based paints) and store with brush hanging downwards so water drips out of the ferrule. Leaving the brush laying flat or with the brush upward while drying causes water to stay inside the ferrule and will loosen the glue holding the cow hairs in place. Never leave brushes “soaking” in a jar of water as this will loosen the glue holding the bristles inside the ferrule.
