DESCRIPTION

Painted felting needles are our favorite for keeping track of what type of felting needles you have, especially during a needle felting project where you may be using different types. Our felting needles are precision-made, high-quality stainless steel felting needles made in Germany. We sell seven different types of painted felting needles, as well as a variety pack of all seven (one of each).

Note: most needle holder tools won't fit any type of painted felting needles, so if you are purchasing needles to go into a needle holder tool, we recommend that you order our unpainted felting needles.

If you are new to needle felting, make sure you have a needle felting mat, as well. We sell mats in foam, burlap and wool. The foam mat is more economical up front, but needs to be replaced more often and is not eco-friendly. The burlap and wool mats last longer, are more economical long-term and are both biodegradable, if they ever need to be replaced.

Here are your needle choices, sold singly with pros and cons of each:

TRIANGLE - barbs on 3 sides

#36 Triangle (Black)

  • Good for beginning stages of felting
  • Good for making the bulk of 3D sculptures
  • Helps shaping go faster
  • Great for attaching loose parts
  • Good for flat felting into prefelt
  • Most sculpting kits include this needle
  • Not good for detail work

#38 Triangle (White)

  • A great "all-around needle"
  • Great for bulky sculpting work
  • Great for flat work
  • Good for adding some details
  • If you are only going to have one needle, this would be a good one
  • Not great for course fibers.

#40 Triangle (Yellow)

  • Use for later stages of sculpting
  • Use where you want to start adding details
  • Use for smoothing and finishing the surface
  • Works well for flat detail work
  • Most sculpting kits include this needle
  • Not a good needle for the beginning stages of bulk sculpture work
  • Not a good needle for course fibers

#42 Triangle (Green)

  • A very fine needle guage used for final stages of sculpting
  • Use where you want to smooth and finish the surface
  • Good for detail work
  • Good for making small parts (leaves and adding tiny wisps of wool like fine hair.
  • Not good for bulk sculpture work or course fibers

STAR - barbs on 4 sides

#38 Star (Blue)

  • Good for quick, firm felting
  • Good for courser wools
  • Good for joining pieces
  • Good for bulk 3D sculpting work
  • Works well adding details
  • Great "all-around" needle
  • Flat needle felting kits worked on linen usually come with this needle
  • 3D needle felting sculpture kits often come with this needle
  • This is another needle that if you could only have one needle, this would be a good one to hhave
  • Might not be the best choice for making small or wispy parts

TWISTED - barbs that twist around the needle

#38 Twisted (Brown)

  • Nice general needle for middle stages of 3D sculpting projects
  • Has a little more oomph to it than the other 38 gauge needles (due to spiral barbs)
  • Felts quickly
  • Felts efficiently while minimizing puncture holes
  • Not good for beginning stages of bulk 3D sculpture work

#40 Twisted (Purple)

  1. Nice general needle for small sculpting projects
  2. Nice general needle for finishing larger projects
  3. Felts quickly
  4. Felts without leaving big puncture holes
  5. Not good for beginning stages of bulk 3D sculpture work
  6. Not recommended for middle stages of 3D sculpture work as the #38

Needle Breakage: If your needles become dull, if you are using too big a guage for the firmness of your project, if you punch your needle into the felt sideways or twist the needle, the thinner end of the needle may break. This is true with any brand of felting needle. Therefore, we always recommend, whenever possible, you have at least one general, all-purpose needle as a back-up needle. We recommend a #38 guage in either the triangle or the star as your 'go-to' and back-up needle.

Please note: There is no universal color code for felting needles. These colors are unique to this brand and the colors may not coincide with felting needles painted and purchased elsewhere. Also, if you are wanting to use a needle holder tool, you may want to purchase our unpainted felting needles instead to make sure they fit.
