Our wooden sand writing tray is handcrafted by a small family run business in the United Kingdom.
Each award-winning piece is made from natural, European Beechwood and finished in a natural, plant-based oil. It arrives with 1 pound of white sand and a wooden “pencil” to use, though a finger is best to begin with and then graduating to the wooden “pencil” once the basic shape is well-practiced. The designs come from a husband-wife team’s years as educators.
Using sand is a tactile and sensory way to help your child become confident with forming letters and numbers. They can use their finger or the writing stick stylus to make marks in the sand, which can be easily wiped away.
This encourages practice without worrying about making mistakes. And to children, this is fun play. To us, we know they are learning.
The same sand tray can be used for forming numbers or shapes. It also makes a tinker tray when not full of sand and is a nice ‘stage’ for a nature table display with an art card in the slots as a backdrop!
The slot at the top of the tray fits any A6 flashcards (4”x6”) perfectly and can be used with alphabet and number flashcards, as well as cvc* cards and sight words.**
*CVC = a word in the format of consonant, vowel, consonant Example: c-a-t
** sight words, in this case is a list of about 100 words that regularly appear over and over and so to know them by sight, rather than using phonics to sound them out, frees up the working memory to focus on other less frequent, but just as important words.
NOTE: Cards not included.
