DESCRIPTION
Traditional crafts are making a comeback. Children used to learn to knit with family members, and it was usual for 8-year olds to know basic knitting skills. One variation to using knitting needles for younger children then, and now, is to use a knitting tower instead.
This hand-crafted, birch knitting tower allows any beginning knitter, children or adults, to make knitted tubes or cords with the tower and their hands that can become hair ties, friendship bracelets, hot pads, placemats, doll blankets or a piece of wall art.
The dual-ends of the birch tower holds stitches while your fingers move the yarn instead of a knitting needle. This aids in the development of motor skills for children and is a wonderful pre-knitting skill to learn.
One end of the tower is carved with 6 pins, giving a tighter stitch, and the other end is carved with 4 pins, for a looser stitch. Each knitting kit gives you a small amount of yarn to practice (yarn colors vary).
This handwork craft is a great activity to introduce to your older kindergartner or first grader (and older kids, too). Not only does this handwork increase finger dexterity, strengthen hand muscles, and instill a sense of accomplishment in children, but it provides a focused, calming activity for children that requires using part of the brain that deals with such things as problem-solving and concentration.
